You’ll have come from the original Head of Legal over at Blogger – thanks for coming and having a look round the new place. I hope you like it and will enjoy reading and commenting here in future. Give it a chance – you’ll feel at home before you know it.
Maybe it’s a bit stark for my liking – by all means let me know what you think. It will develop and I hope come to feel a bit softer and more colourful before long.
I’ll be posting here from now on – so please change your RSS feeds, and come back again soon!
Well… what can I say… I told you not to eat all those blue Viagra pills in one go… but hey…
Stark. This is a legal website designed by an ex-government lawyer who enjoys his wine… I like it.
Right.. now I have to change about eight RSS feeds… but, for you, I can do it…
Are you going to be doing a private membership area… on here… if you know what I mean. Geeeklawyer said you might be.
Speak soon…

Great new theme.
Private membership? I’ve not got a clue about that.
Thanks, Barboy!

And apologies for all the RSS changes. Ugh. Someone will come up with a brilliant app for that one day, that’ll do them all automatically.
Good luck with this new website. I look forward to seeing how it develops.
Excellent !
If you are thinking about a private area, whart about a ning.com community (your own Facebook, essentially)?
Love the “ding ding” triangles. Can we have tubular bells, as well?
I think you’ve also set it up well to draw in comments.
Matt

Feedburner? There are pros and cons.

Feedburner – of course!
Feedburner also gives you an easy subscribe by email option, which may well be appropriate for your antideluvian lawyer customers (cough).

Welcome to the world of WordPress! 🙂
There’s an e-mail plugin for WordPress that mails the latest posts to people – ideal if you don’t want to use Feedburner.

Thanks, Jon!
Nice new place you have here (apart from the horizontal scroll bar I’m getting).
Shame! I’ve had some problems with the site today, too – sorry. Too ambitious with the plugins I think.
Starker the better, as far as I’m concerned.
Er, perhaps that’s not very well put.
Looks very nice. But the links in the ‘most commented’ column are a bit screwed.
I’ll check that out. I’m not sure gravatars in the most recent comments section work properly, either.
OOO, what a very smart new place you have here, Carl! Happy Housewarming!! 🙂
Fantastic! All looks really good and I can finally read the full posts via RSS in Google Reader (and using Byline on my iPhone) – great! Now if you could just convince Mike that self-hosted WordPress is a much better option than WordPress.com… 🙂
On the permalinks front, I’m quite partial to a custom structure of /%category%/%postname%/ as it’s shorter and cleaner. (Or even simply /%postname%/ if you don’t use Categories.) There’s a very small probability that it’ll clash with an identical previous post title, but if it does then WordPress will append -2 to the end of the new post’s permalink.
Here are a few more handy plugin suggestions, if you haven’t had your fill:
Contact Form 7. Allows you to easily create a form for your Contact page – useful in cases where the visitor can’t use the email link:
Google Sitemap Generator. Generates an XML Sitemap file that allows search engines to index your site more efficiently.
wp-Recaptcha. If Akismet stops being effective and you find lots of spam getting through, this is a good captcha solution.
wp-Typography. Provides some nice typographical tweaks. Best used with wp-Supercache (which you have installed from the looks of things).
Oh, if you were having problems with your site on the 6th, a Twitter plugin may well have been the culprit. Plugins that pull external data will in effect ‘hang’ the site while waiting for the data to arrive, and as Twitter was being DDoSed it didn’t respond to API calls at all for most of the day (they’d disabled them). Oedipus Lex’s site suffered this fate as he had ‘Twitter Tools’ installed.
Doesn’t look like you need it, but do feel free to get in touch if you need any WordPress advice, I run several sites with it (including Geeklawyer’s) and know it quite well.

worryingly masonic symbol….
bit i am, as ever, over-picky. looks great and i always applaud a move to wordpress. nice helpful widgets and someone called lawminx appears to have given you an award – must be good!
congratulations on the makeover – no doubt the content (which was in no need of improvement) will remain top notch.

I like the new site: it is very clear and easy to follow.
The only minor improvement I can think of is a small design faux pas – in the title banner your ‘sales of justice ‘ motif is slightly squashed into the wrong aspect ratio – a bit like watching old TV programmes artificially stretched into widescreen (a pet hate).
This is, of course, of no practical importance whatsoever but just takes the edge off the otherwise very pleasing visual effect of the new site.
