This isn’t a case in the US Supreme Court, I’m sorry to say, but a piece at Huffington Post in which the famous lawyer lays into the evangelical candidate Mike (how am I not myself?) Huckabee’s evangelical view on the constitution. Good stuff.
Gosh, that’s Head of Legal‘s first-ever link to YouTube.
The “divided by a common language” remark is a cliche now, but nowhere is it more starkly apparent than with religion. The irony is that we can understand and participate in American debate and politics, but it isn’t really all that relevant to the problems, priorities and sensibilities in the UK. We’re much closer in culture (and would have more to gain) by reading the media and politics of our European neighbours. Unfortunately, very few of us can understand a bloody word they say.
And one of the other Republican candidates, Mitt Romney, is a Mormon! God help us if either of these gets elected!
Well, yes, Employed: but then, we’ve just had a PM who was religious enough to be a candidate in the US! And now a “son of the manse”… A good reason for voting for Nick Clegg perhaps. There must be one.
And why am I not surprised to hear from you on this issue, John? Fortunately I don’t think either Romney or Huckabee has as much chance as either of us would have in their hell.
🙂 I hope you’re right!
